Now the Bucks have officially won the finals and lifted the Larry O'Brien trophy, I figured this was a good time to rank the top 5 trades that almost happened this season. These were all heavily rumored with tons of sources to back these talks up. Some say they came down to including one final player or pick. All I know is these would've made this year so much more fun, but the good news is the NBA always wins the offseason media cycle so we can only wait to see what major moves happen very soon.
1. Ben Simmons to the Rockets
2. James Harden to the 76ers
I am treating this as the top two options, this might be cheating but I really don't care. The fact this trade probably should've happened is crazy to think about, I mean it almost makes to much sense for it not to have happened. Daryl Morey could've gotten his favorite player for his new team, while off loading what I like to call him the "dilemma" Ben Simmons. Some say it came down to whether or not Philly would include Maxey, others say the Rockets owner was never actually going to trade to Morey, either way this trade probably should've happened. I mean what the rockets got from the NETS is horrible and now Simmons trade value is at all time low and it is a real possibility he's traded for a 2nd tier star in McCollum.
3. Jrue Holliday to the NETS
I think Jrue in theory is actually better fit here than Harden, he's always healthy, he doesn't need the ball and he might be the best perimeter defender in the game. He's a perfect 3rd star and he just showed it in the finals. Plus I don't think the Nets would've had to give up near as much as they did for Harden so they could've kept some role players and picks. In the end the Nets have James Harden and if he doesn't get hurt they probably win the finals, so it's hard to argue with this trade.
4. Chris Paul to the Bucks
I know the bucks won the finals so it's not a good argument, but the other team in this finals was lead by this guy, and if he would've been traded to play with Giannis and Khris it could've been right up there with the best big 3's in the league. Also, like the Jrue to the Nets argument the Bucks would've saved a lot of draft capital and role players that would've deepened there bench that desperately needed some help, but at the end of the day they won the finals so who am I to play Monday morning GM.
5. Kyle Lowry to the Lakers
Now this trade just confuses me why this didn't happen, I mean by all accounts it was done at the trade deadline, but the Lakers nixed it because they were scared about losing THT. Trust me I love THT, but to get a 3rd star while LeBron is on the home stretch of his career, I mean come on. If they would've made this move there is a very good shot it would be LA holding Larry right now for consecutive years. Now lets see this offseason if the front office can fix this mistake which by all accounts it sounds like they have some major plans with very little obvious moves. This is going to be a fun offseason, lets see if LeBron has some GM recruiting magic left in him.
