My Top 5 Sitcoms of Recent Memory
By: Weston Swift
The art of a sitcom is something that has been around basically since the start of the television in homes. With time they have created movie stars and also gave hope to a few movie stars who have flamed out of appearing on the big screen. With the help of streaming services sitcoms have received a new life, especially with the new generations who hate commercials, and only want to binge anythings and everything. I mean it makes national news when Friends or The Office are changing streaming services, some people only bought Peacock or HBO Max because of these shows. Now with the renaissance of shows going on this is a list of the TOP 10 Sitcoms of the Modern Era.
1) FRIENDS
This sitcom laid out the format for many to come after it, also with the help of Netflix if you ask most 20 something year old most will admit this is a guilty pleasure show. The 6 Friend format where they hangout in a coffee shop, and create different love interest story lines is one of the most popular shows ever to hit television if you don't believe me look at the season count. Also, the reason I put this in this spot is because they are one of the only shows to not lose a main cast member while filming the show. Hopefully the reboot coming to HBO Max will live up to the original, but I would be very pessimistic about that.
2) The Office
Michael Scott and Dunder Mifflin are one of the most iconic duos in television history, this show is single handedly keeping Peacock alive. They have the Jim and Pam love story that ever y good sitcoms needs. The cast is one of the most diverse we've seen and it works, that's the genius of the show that literally every kind of person is in on the joke and it's hilarious. The only reason that this is #2 is because Friends never lost a major character, The Office lost Michael Scott the most important character of the entire show! Still I can't deny the brilliance of this show and that is why I have it at #2.
3) How I Met Your Mother
The Friends copycat sitcom, hey I think it is brilliant, Friends left the tv world and there was a huge hole to be filled by a group of Young friends who hang out in the same place everyday. It's a formula that can't be denied, it's like Alabama being good every year, you know whats coming and still can't stop it. The show drags on for a season to long and the big reveal of the mother was very underwhelming, also the ending truly was horrid, but in there defense the end of long running shows rarely lands very well. Though I can't argue the success, plus they never lost a main character no matter how hard Judd Apatow wanted Jason Segel or marvel needing Cobie Smulders.
4) Parks and Rec
Now here is the Office copycat, Plenty of close up camera acknowledgments, takes place in the work place, but again it works and I can't deny it. Also this was a jumping off point for many young actors including Chris Pratt and Aubrey Plaza. The Love story dynamic was in abundance in the show and the humor still holds up today.
5) Brooklyn 99
Otherwise known as the Andy Samberg project. Many people thought he was going to be a movie star after his stint with SNL, but Samberg chose to make a show that he can be himself and run everything. Which I can't blame him, the show is a huge success with the 8th and final season coming this year. It tackles many big social issues while making you belly laugh, not a lot of things can do that. Hopefully we see Samberg be in more things like his movie Palm Springs that came out this year.
(BONUS) Seinfeld
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, one of the greatest comedians of all time and this was the peak of his powers. He made a million a episode, that is how popular this show was. Now you can see him in Comedians in Cars getting coffee or Bee Movie, but others than that he is living off of this show and its monetary success. PS, This show is probably the greatest sitcom of all time, I just hated in the later seasons when they lost Larry David as the writer and I needed this show like 8 years later, I'm sorry I know I am young.
